History never repeats itself – or hardly ever. After a first album that came out four years ago, the Parisian group Liquid Architecture, composed of Audrey Mascina and Jérôme Sans, is back with a new record, which shows them striding towards new horizons and giving their music an extra dimension, somewhere between energy rock and electronic mantras.
Straight away, the new album evokes a cry from the heart, savage and fragile all at once, far more immediate than the precious disc. First, you just need to look at the names of the songs, full of glamour and humour. When taken together, they give the fleeting impression of telling a love story hidden behind the very title of the disc in the pipeline, I Love to Love. And then you need to listen to the music playing, just there. It is raw and sexy, as though inhabited by a desire to devour everything and impose its presence on the world. In this it recalls the records of groups like The Kills or Royal Trux, who also produced discs inhabited by a raw vision of primitive rock reformulated for a contemporary era. This modernity comes through with Liquid Architecture when certain moments last longer than normal, and passages of what seemed like rock turn out to be pieces of almost minimal techno, ceaselessly repeated, as though woven by a vibrating machine (and one full of desire – here we are often on the edge of a highly guttural eroticism) rather than a rhythm section in automatic mode. And we touch on the essence shared by rock’n’roll and techno: the endless repetition of the same motif in order to seduce, excite, tame, hypnotise and haunt. That’s how they are, this group and the girl who so fully embodies it: at the crossroads of paths and musics that are reflected in this second album not with solemnity or affectation, but with power and determination.

Après un premier album sorti il y a 4 ans, le groupe parisien Liquid Architecture, crée par Audrey Mascina et Jérôme Sans, revient avec un nouveau disque qui le voit s’emparer d’horizons différents et donner à sa musique une dimension supplémentaire, quelque part entre énergie rock et mantras électroniques.
Le nouvel album évoque d’emblée un cri du coeur, féroce et fragile à la fois, bien plus instantané que le précédent disque. Il suffit, d’abord, de regarder les noms des chansons, pleines de glam et d’humour. Assemblées, elles donnent l’impression fugitive de raconter une histoire d’amour dissimulée derrière le titre même du disque en préparation, I Love to Love. Et puis, il faut écouter la musique qui se joue, juste là. Elle est brute, sexy, comme habitée par une envie de tout dévorer et d’être très présente au monde. Elle évoque en cela les disques de groupes comme The Kills ou Royal Trux, auteurs eux aussi de disques habités par une vision brute du rock primitif, mais reformaté pour une époque contemporaine. Cette modernité transparait chez Liquid Architecture lorsque certains moments durent plus longtemps qu’à l’accoutumée et de rock se dévoilent comme des morceaux de techno presque minimale, répétitifs à l’envi, comme ourdi par une machine vibrante (et désirante – on est souvent ici aux limites d’un érotisme très guttural) plutôt que par une section rythmique en mode automate. Et l’on touche là à l’essence commune du rock’n’roll et de la techno : répéter inlassablement le même motif pour séduire, exciter, apprivoiser, hypnotiser, hanter. Ce groupe-là et la fille qui l’incarne pleinement sont ainsi : à la croisée de chemins et de musiques dont ce deuxième album rend compte sans solennité ni manières, mais avec puissance et détermination.
